This preface is meant to create a strong desire in the heart of the reader to seek guidance from the Lord of the Universe, Who alone can grant it. It has been placed at the very beginning of the book to teach this lesson to the reader: if you sincerely want to benefit from the Quran, you should offer this prayer to the Lord of the Universe. This Surah is in fact a prayer which Allah has taught to all those who want to make a study of His book. Before this, only a few miscellaneous verses were revealed which form parts of `ALAQ, MUZ-ZAMMIL, MUD-DATH-THIR, etc. As a matter of fact, we learn from authentic Traditions that it was the first complete Surah which was revealed to Muhammed (Allah’s peace be upon him).
It is one of the very earliest Revelations to the Holy Prophet. In other words, Al-Fatihah is a sort of preface. Fatihah is that which opens a subject or a book or any other thing. This Surah is named AL-FATIHAH because of its subject-matter. ? Our mission is to make it easy to read and understand the Qur’an. In the last two verses, it asks for guidance, if Allah (سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ) is to bestow his favours on us nothing can befall us, we can’t be led astray. We put our complete trust in Him, and we ask for his help alone. The middle part of the Surah deals with our relationship to the creator, it is he we worship. It begins with the bismillah, claiming his merciful nature, then recognizes and praises His disposition as being the Lord of the worlds, and the king of the day of judgment. The contents of this Surah itself are about the nature of Allah (سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ) in the first four verses.
The patient got cured and his people presented the sheep to them, but they said, “We will not take it unless we ask the Prophet (whether it is lawful).” When they asked him, he smiled and said, “How do you know that Surat-al-Fatiha is a Ruqya? Take it (flock of sheep) and assign a share for me.” One of them (the Prophet’s companions) started reciting Surat-al-Fatiha and gathering his saliva and spitting it (at the snake-bite). They said, (to the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) ), “Have you got any medicine with you or anybody who can treat with Ruqya?” The Prophet’s companions said, “You refuse to entertain us, so we will not treat (your chief) unless you pay us for it.” So they agreed to pay them a flock of sheep. While they were in that state, the chief of that tribe was bitten by a snake (or stung by a scorpion). Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: Some of the companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) came across a tribe amongst the tribes of the Arabs, and that tribe did not entertain them. There is hadith in Bukhari which corroborates this notion. Narrated Abu Hurairah: that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Al-Hamdulillah is Umm Al-Qur’an and Umm Al-Kitab and the seven oft-repeated.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3124)Īmong other names, Surah fatiha is called al-Shifa meaning “the cure” for it’s perceived healing of the body and soul. Some refer to this Surah as Umm al-Kittab meaning “Mother of the Book” because it is believed to contain the entire message of the Qur’an. One of the leading schools believe it was revealed in Medina, however, this is generally less likely. It is regarded by most to be an early Meccan surah because its required reading in daily prayer. Surah Fatiha is called “the opening” for being the first Surah of the Qur’an. It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
